Mrs. Ramsey’s night
     A year ago, Mrs. Ramsey ___woke__ (wake up) at 1.30.am. 
     At first, she didn’t know why she __had woken up__ (wake up),
     but then she __heard_ (hear) a noise. It was a scratching
     sound. Mrs. Ramsey __listened___ (listen) carefully, she had
     never__ (never, hear) that sound before. While she __was
     sitting___ (sit) in her bed the noise __got __ (get) louder. 
    The old woman wondered where the sound was coming from.
    Although she _was afraid_ (be afraid), she decided to get out
    of bed. 

    “I __think_ (think) this is a cat, that ____is playing__ (play) 
    with my dustbins/trashcans. I _will chase____ (chase) it away
    so I can sleep again,” she thought. But then, the noise 
    suddenly _changed_ (change). 

“  This sounds like someone  talking (talk),” she whispered to
    herself.
    Meanwhile her dog Tim ___was waking up__ (wake up) as 
     well.

    Tim __walked_____ (walk) up to her bed and 
     __whimpered____ (whimper) quietly. 

    “Shush,” she said. “Be quiet, you __are___ (be) such a baby!” 
     But really, she was scared herself though she __wanted _ 
     (want) to be brave. Before she went to the back window to 
     see what was going on, she _went__ (go) into the kitchen to
     get a rolling pin. Slowly, she __tiptoed_____ (tiptoe) to the
     window.     

      You said that old bat __wouldn’t be/wasn’t____ (be not) 
      home!”

    “So what __do we do___ (we do) now?” 
 
     Mrs. Ramsey’s heart __was beating__ (beat) fast. Tim, her 
     dog __hid___ (hide) under the sofa and looked scared. 
 
“   We __rob_ (rob) her house, of course! That’s what we
      __decided____ (decide) to do three weeks ago and this is 
     what we _will do__ (do).”
 
     Mrs. Ramsey froze – what could she do?
     “Rob the house when she’s inside? __Are_____ (be) you
      crazy?!” the other voice asked.
     Mrs. Ramsey __took__ (take) a deep breath and said to 
     herself.

     “Okay, I need to do something. I _will tiptoe_ (tiptoe) back 
     into my bedroom and close my eyes. That is the safest thing 
     to do.” While she __was walking___ (walk) back to her room 
     there was a loud noise, rtshhhh. The old lady _stopped (stop)
     for a second and __looked__ (look) around. Then she ran 
     into her bedroom and closed the door. As she __lay_ (lie) in 
     bed she thought: “Nobody _has ever broken___ (ever break)
     into my house, and I _have never been _ (never be) so scared 
     in my entire life.”

     The noise Mrs. Ramsey __heard___ (hear), had come from 
     the door. Now she could hear footsteps and whispering.
     “Where __do you want__ (you want) to start?” a voice
      asked.      

      The other voice answered:
“    Of course we _start_ (start) in the bedroom.  We always
     do  that.  That’s where the old ladies keep all their gold!”

     Mrs. Ramsey thought: “That ___is___ (be) true, I also
     _keep__     (keep) my gold in the bedroom.”
“   Alright then, but you go first.” Slowly the footsteps got_ 
     (get)  closer.

“    Hands up into the air, and don’t you move an inch,” a 
      loud  voice said. “You are under arrest!”
     
      Mrs Ramsey _opened__ (open) her eyes and turned around
      in bed. A young police officer _walked___ (walk) up to her 
      bed. 

      “Are you okay?” he asked. 

      “Yes, thank you. I _heard____ (hear) noises and __woke
       up___   (wake up). When I heard the two men speaking 
      about breaking in I __decided___ (decide) to go back to bed
      and _pretend________________ (pretend) to be asleep. 
      It was too late to call you. How did you know…I mean…why 
     are you here now?” the lady asked.

“    One of your neighbours _had woken up__ (wake up) from 
      the noise as well. He saw two men at your door and _
      thought_ (think) something was wrong. So he _called__ (call)
      us,” the officer said with a smile. “So you should thank your
      neighbour.” 

      Mrs. Ramsey smiled and answered, “Yes, thank you. I _will
      thank__ (thank) him tomorrow, but now I really need some
      sleep.”

       The next morning Mrs Ramsey _went__ (go) to her 
       neighbour and __thanked_____________ (thank) him for
       calling the police. She was very happy that they __had
      realized__ (realize) what was going on. She was so thankful
      that she wanted to repay them in some way. She offered to 
      do some of their washing and ironing, because she ___knew
     (know) her neighbours had very busy jobs. At first they _said__
      (say) no, but then Mrs Ramsey really wanted to do something
      for them, so they said okay. Since that day Mrs. Ramsey and
      her neighbour ___have been__ (be) very good friends. They
      _meet_ (meet) for tea and cake at least once a week and
     _help___ (help) each other. 
       
     “I   really like having more contact with the neighbours. 
     Now we also share work. Right now, for instance, I __am
     ironing___(iron) their clothes and they _are cutting__ (cut) 
     my trees.”

       Walter tells James that he has been chosen as the N.O.C. and 
       that his assignment is to follow Layla, get information from 
       her and find out who she is reporting to.

       James starts his new job at Langley where he is supposed to
       be a low-level data processor.  Layla works at Langley in the
       Science and Tech department.  James comes up with ways to
       bump into Layla so that she is aware that he works there now.

       They have coffee together, he puts a bug (microphone) on 
       her jacket without her knowing.  He monitors what she is 
       doing by the sound coming from the microphone.  
   
       Walter gives James a special badge/pass that would allow
       him to enter the area where Layla works.  James uses this
       badge to gain access into the area and to get into Layla's 
       office.  He hacks into her computer to see some information
       but has to quickly shut down and leave her office before
       she gets there.
