Rules for the Present Perfect Tense - see page 11 in the book

1 - The action started in the past and continues to the present.
Example:  I have been working at my job for the past 5 years.
(It means I am still there)

2 - The action repeats during a period of time that started in the past and continues to the present.
Example:  He has sent out 20 resumes so far.
(It implies that he started and is continuing to send out resumes)

3 -  The action occurred at an indefinite time in the past. It still has importance.
Example:  Mr. Johnson has received Daniel's letter.
(We don't know when he received it.  It happened some time in the past.  It is still important to a          present situation.)
---------------

"For" is used for a period of time.

"Since" (gives a starting point)
